The pages which follow provide a broad overview of specific research ethics/RCR issues. Each of the topic area pages is divided into five sections. The Background section of each gives a brief introduction to the issue and provides some historical context. Rules/Regulations/Guidelines surveys federal and institutional policies, when applicable, that are relevant to the issue. When there are no formal policies, existing guidelines are covered. The Considerations section offers a few ethical principles that are particularly relevant to the issue; these are meant to illustrate ways that responsible conduct relates to the issue in question. These considerations serve to provide motivation for and critical thinking about specific guidelines and recommendations. The Summary section provides an overview of the important points covered in the text. Finally, each section has a list of additional Resources on the topic, as well as Cases (for most topics) and Surveys (for some topics).
